Ministry of Health: Unprecedented low level of medicines in Gaza stores

[ PIC 14/04/2012 – 02:31 PM ]

GAZA, (PIC)– Dr. Ashraf Al-Qudra, the spokesman for the Health Ministry in Gaza, has warned of a new and unprecedented drop in the ministry’s stores of medicine.

He said in a press release on Saturday that 180 kinds of medicines and 210 kinds of medical consumables were depleted in the warehouses of the General Directorate of Pharmacy.

Qudra asserted that the severe deterioration in the drugs’ availability is the most dangerous in the series of the Pharmaceutical crises in the Strip, which is considered to be the most important result of the Gaza siege.

The spokesman said that the continued shortage of medicines and medical supplies is intensifying day by day and represents a direct threat to the health services in all sectors.

Simultaneously, he warned of reaching a real catastrophe that will result in serious impacts on patients in the entire Gaza Strip as a result of these shortages, which reached their highest level since the occupation’s imposition of an illegal blockade on Gaza Strip.

In fact, 390 varieties of medicines and medical supplies are currently out of stock, in addition to 150 other kinds which are expected to be depleted during the next three months, Qudra said, adding, “Therefore, more than one third of patients in the Gaza Strip would be seriously affected, especially those with chronic diseases in addition to the serious impact on the laboratories’ requirements and radiology departments”.

He pointed out that this coincides with the continued power outages’ crisis that is still sweeping areas of the Gaza Strip, directly affecting the health services’ sector.

Qudra called on the international community with all its humanitarian as well as health institutions to end their unjustified silence and to put an end to the suffering of the Gaza Strip’s patients as well as to intensify their efforts in order to protect the patients’ treatment rights and ensure the continuation of health care.

He also called the national Palestinian factions, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the World Health Organization, and the Centers for human rights and media organizations to put pressure on the Ministry of Health in Ramallah to take a positive attitude toward the patients in the Gaza Strip.

Articles 55 and 56 of the Fourth Geneva Convention clearly establish that Israel, as the occupying power, not only has a duty to ensure medical supplies reach hospitals in the OPT, but to ensure and maintain the services of the hospitals too. As High Contracting Parties to the Geneva Conventions, other states not only have a moral duty but also a legal obligation to ensure Israel abides by its commitments to the protected population of the OPT.

UN Convention of the Rights of the Child, As a States Party to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, Israel is obliged under Article 24 of the treaty to recognise the right of every child under its effective jurisdiction “to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health and to facilities for the treatment of illness and rehabilitation of health. States Parties shall strive to ensure that no child is deprived of his or her right of access to such health care services”.

While in the horrible holocaust, 1 in 6, so 1 million people died of the Nazi but exactly similar deliberate deprivation, Israel is doing exactly the same to Palestinians. Research (see link below) showed the annual deathrate by violent & passive aggression is about 5000 deaths a year. Called Avoidable mortality or Excess Death.

For the sake of children and ill people in Palestine, share this post as wide as you can and keep sharing it. Health is no choice for many, right to medical care is a Human Right. Infringement of such is a passive form of aggression which policies Israel deliberately deploys with the intention to ethnic cleanse.

SHARING = CARING!

How many more dead corpses of Palestinians and their children does the international community need to see in order to act?
How many more cruelties and violations of Human Rights, Regulations and International Law will be needed?
How long so the world intervenes in this ongoing warcrime and it will be stopped once and for all?
