Abbas threatened to cut diplomatic and economic ties with Israel

Islam Times – In light of the repeated failures of many rounds of Middle East talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, its acting chief, Mahmoud Abbas has threatened recently to cut diplomatic and economic ties with Israel and to call for a Palestinian popular uprising against it.

Abbas told the Egyptian TV on Friday that he planned to make “a dramatic announcement” within 10 days, after talks with Israel had failed.

Palestinians in Gaza say that the Middle East Talks are just a mirage that will not achieve the aspirations of the Palestinian people for freedom and independence.

Abbas’ statement came after Israel refused to stop its settlement activities across the occupied West Bank.

Some experts say that the PA is under the mercy of the Israeli side therefore it will not be able to cut any kind of relationship.
Some also say that Abba’s plan reflects a mixture of frustration and maneuver and an expression for the need to look for alternatives.

Nearly half a million Israelis live in more than 100 settlement units built since the 1967 Israeli occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem al-Quds.

In light of Israel’s ongoing settlement activities in the occupied west bank and its defiance to international law, Palestinians say that Israel is only buying time.
