Amnesty Urges Israel to Immediately Release Palestinian Hunger Striker

Qatar News Agency | March 25, 2012

London, March 24 (QNA) – Palestinian prisoner Hana Shalabi who has been on hunger strike for over a month is “at risk of death”, Amnesty International said on Friday, calling on Israeli authorities to release her.

The international human rights watchdog said Shalabi should be immediately released or charged with a recognizable criminal offense and “promptly” put on trial.

“The woman could die in detention after 37 days on hunger strike,” Amnesty said in a statement.

Shalabi has been on hunger strike since her arrest on February 16 in the West Bank.

Shalabi, 29, was one of the released Palestinian detainees in the Egypt-sponsored prisoner swap deal last year, that traded 1,000 Palestinian prisoners in October for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who has been captured by Hamas for five years. (QNA)
